Are the early XC90's reliable? If not, what are some common issues?

I think it’s the T6 model, but the trans will fail in it. Not if, will.

No, I wouldn’t get anything pre-2007. My parents had 2 XC90s, an ‘05 and an ‘09. The ‘05 was the T5 engine, and it had a slew of issues. The ‘09 was fine, except the AC pump failed. I know a few friends that had problems too. Early XC90s are the only unreliable Volvos I know of.

Our 850 Turbo lasted us 3 months before we gave up on it and bought an Impala. A 2005 Impala. The Impala was an upgrade. Our 240 was also a headache, as was our 740.

Oof, sorry to hear. An ‘02 Impala was my first car. Garbage.

Well, my sister’s one is a pile of dog shit. Turns like a manatee that just got woken up from a really good nap, and is not happy in a drowsy way.

Avoid the 4speed auto (on the 6cyl iirc) and the Yamaha V8 and then it'll be as reliable as a 10-year old Volvo.

EL_ULY has a first-gen XC90, talk to him.
My mom leased a 2007 one for 3 years and never had any issues with it, but she returned it at the end of the lease.

Early 00s turbo Volvos are prone to failure. The NA ones (I don’t know if the XC ever had the NA 2.9l) tend to be pretty solid. I’ve heard of AWD issues are common with the sedans and wagons.

As a Volvo Master Tech that owns a 05 XC90 , my words are invalid since I could tackle any issue with ease :]
Like ANY used car though, there will be typical used car issues. Also like ANY used car, the previous owner’s way of maintaining it is key.
XC90 specific things are wear items for the most part. Keeping track with the crankcase ventilation system and rubber suspension components. What ever issues that i’ve seen here in my shop is never something that will happen to all. My XC90 has been pretty flawless where as others can have more things go wrong.... again, like ANY used car :]
My tip, give it a good look over and find out what has been done to it. Basically standard used car look over process. For XC90, suspension components, crankcase ventalation, and trim. For XC90 07-, check drives belt maintenance,, A/C system, and suspension components.
As far as the vehicle I LOVE my Moose!!!!! It’s a 2.5 turbo and like any Volvo real tech can tell you, it’s solid as a rock and extra easy to work on compared to the more advanced and powerful 3.2l 6cyl. Looks great, has an incredible chassis (very stable and car like), and is just so.. Swedish :] I have a one with an easy access 3rd row. All seats including the front passenger can go down flat for moving things. Drives like a champ! Interiors is elegant and has a lot of neat little random features.
Oh... it’s safe as hell!!! SIPS, BLIS, DSTC, ultra advances SRS, and all the Volvo reinforcement wizardry under the skin.
(Avoid the V8 and twin turbo 2.9L 6 cyl.)

Avoid V8? :(

Al chile, it was not too good. Expensive components when things go bad, very labor intensive, gas guzzler, and not too fast all in all for a V8. The new T6 (4cyl super/turbo) would walk all over the old V8. Neta

It was reliable until 100k miles when the engine started knocking. It was still slightly more reliable.

It is a beast! Big fan of the Drive-E engines. Efficient and powerful as balls! 100% Swedish and we’ve yet to hear a complaint from any customer. A lot of people talking trash about a 4cyl...... until they go for a test drive. They can’t believe it lol :] Can’t to drive the S90 T8

never heard anybody say any of those 3 volvos was unreliable, you got super unlucky. And now you have to drive an 05 impala, even more unlucky

Got rid of that years ago. I think 240 owners are just delusional. Everyone I’ve met that has one brags about how reliable they are, right before they go through the list of things they have replaced to keep it going down the road. The 850 was just a lemon though, it had some serious electrical issues.

My dad has a 244. The only issue is the exhaust was held on with a rubber band that failed. 2nd owner, we’ve had it for 6 years.
